Greeting Families!
From Our Principal
Greetings Families,

I hope you've enjoyed the weekend. Thank you for attending our first Parent Educator Conference of the 2018-2019 school year. We have 4 more to come and I am looking forward to seeing you there. Many of you participated in the Work Journal Jams, Parent Panel discussion and Career Speaker Series in addition to workshops by teachers. We hope you took something meaningful from the day!

This past week, in addition to hosting our parents on Wednesday, Da Vinci Schools had the opportunity to host a variety of schools visiting from across the country for our first ever Transforming Learning Collaborative. Teams of educators congregated on our campuses to learn from each other, be inspired by each other and explore topics such as project based learning, real world learning and our unique models (Connect--K-8, Rise, Extension). I had the honor of co-presenting workshops with our own Rita Bouchard, Kelly Ann Sassone and Darlene Wonggaew on topics like Building Culture and Community as well as how to help students "Show What they Know" through Exhibition, Presentations of Learning and Student Led Conferences.

Speaking of SLCs, I wish to take a moment to encourage us all to take a fresh perspective with this new year as we enter into our first round of Student Led Conferences. One thing I took away from spending last week with educators from other organizations is just how fortunate we are to be part of Da Vinci Schools. Practices such as SLCs are a known and predictable part of what we do. We don't have to ask for the time to do it, I don't have to convince my teachers it's worth their time or factor it into negotiated contracts. We all believe it's good for kids, research tells us college graduates are typically not equipped to show their learning and speak confidently about their ideas (and a myriad of other "show what you know" skills we practice regularly), so we do it. If you are someone who approaches SLCs as another thing you have to do, I want to ask you to take a fresh perspective and fall back in love with SLCs. We don't have to, we get to! It's not just required, it's an opportunity. If it's hard for your child, that's why we do it! If your child gets nervous, that's why we do it! Enjoy this time with your child and watch him or her shine. I will be doing the same during my children's SLCs. And I will be reminding myself why, as a mom first and an educator second, I chose and continue to choose Da Vinci Schools for my children.

Enjoy your week!

DV Connect Cares!
Thank you to everyone who so generously donated shoes to our
shoe drive for Escuela Hilario De Paz in Izabel Village in Guatemala! Because of you and your children's amazing generosity, we were able to collect over 100 pairs of shoes for children and adults! Most children go to and from school over tough, rocky terrain in bare feet, so your shoes will make such a huge difference in their daily lives! Your giving is so very heart-warming and appreciated! Thank you so very much!!!??
We have a few DV Connect opportunities coming up for this month! We will be walking at the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 28th starting at 9:00 am at the Manhattan Beach Pier which helps to benefit our friends with special needs! There will be pumpkin races following the walk.??
Also, on Monday, October 29th, please join us at 4:00 pm in your costumes at the Anderson Park Senior Center, where we will be hanging out with the seniors there. There will be a picnic gathering and play in the park after. Wishing you all a very happy and safe Halloween!??????
