From Our Principal

Greetings Families!

It was a pleasure to spend Friday evening watching Wonder with so many of our families as we continue the Kindness Movement at Connect! Thank you for being involved!

I want to take a moment to thank all of you who participated in the DV Connect HS survey and attended a discussion with me last week! Your input is very helpful! I have partnered with a team of business students from UCLA Anderson's MBA program and they are helping us conduct market research to better understand the supports and programs already available in Los Angeles and identify the gaps that a Connect program can fill. Two of our researchers will be here during PEC and are looking for 46 parents willing to spend 20 minutes being interviewed. You can sign up here! (I know you will likely want to see the workshop selection/times first, but for now, you know where to find the link!)

Our staff is working hard preparing for our third Parent Educator Conference of the year. Please come! Mark your calendars, encourage a fellow parent (or a homeschooling friend, even if they don't attend Connect!) to come with you, and enjoy the day (or a single workshop--you decide what works best for you!).

Enjoy your week,
M_Rainey sig
From Our Dean of Students

Thank you to everyone who organized and participated in our annual winter Film Festival, sponsored by the Kindness Movement! What a great way to spend a Friday evening. :)

To continue last week's publication of student poems from our Kindness assembly, here is a poem written and shared by Core 5 student, Winter Biel:

An Exercise in Kindness

Everyone strives to be loving and kind
But you may have it wrong in your incredible mind
You don't have to spend money or dedicate your life,
Because even the small kindness's are still super nice
Take a second to hold open a door,
Give a hug, a compliment, or do your sister's chore
The old saying goes "It's the thought that counts,"
And it's more about quality, not the amount.

There are hundreds of simple things we can say,
To be very kind and make someone's day:
"Your hair today looks very nice." or
"Your handwriting is so neat and concise."
You can even say something like "Hey, nice shirt!"
Just avoid comments that could make people hurt.
So let's practice, right here, right now
Don't be stressed, I'll tell you how
Turn to the person next to you and find
Something you like, then say something kind.

Okay everyone, wasn't that fun?
You can practice on siblings, your dad, or your mum
You can practice in the mirror, to friends, or at school,
Just remember that it's like the golden rule.
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
If you give out kindness, you'll receive some, too.

Be on the look-out for the Mykie's Coffee and Bakery truck by Mychal's Learning Place! Mychal's is located locally here in Hawthorne on Rosecrans Blvd. and is a day program for kids and adults with special needs! They offer many services to the community, one of them being a coffee and bakery truck that they just opened up! We are excited to have them come and set up shop during our PEC on February 6th, and to help us take care of our coffee and delicious baked goods needs while supporting the independence of adults with developmental disabilities in our community! For more information about Mykie's and Mychal's Learning Place, please go to www.mychals.org.
