From Our Principal

Greetings Families,

We are looking forward to seeing you at this week's Parent Educator Conference, our third this year. Our teachers spend time planning workshops that are specifically meant to support your journey as a parent educator. We have prepared topics that range from social emotional learning, parenting and instructional strategies. See you there!

Also, please consider signing up for an interview with the UCLA business students who are helping us conduct market research on high school independent study. Whether your child is in middle school or younger, your opinions are still helpful! Sign up here!

Thank you,
M_Rainey sig

Hi Families! I hope you are enjoying the rainy weekend :) There are so many exciting PEC workshops on the schedule (see below blurb for more details!) , I hope you are as excited as we are! I'm looking forward to a day of learning and collaborating with each other!

I'd also like to thank the Burke, Haubner, and Arzuaga family for gathering, cleaning, washing, and donating our leftover lost and found items from first semester! We appreciate the time and energy that went in to supporting us with this task! THANK YOU!

I am also looking forward to our first of a four-part series diving in to Dan Siegel's book, "Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain"! As previously mentioned, due to a mass availability, we will be meeting on Thursdays at 2pm. Our first Book Club meeting will take place on Thursday Feb. 14 at 2pm! Things You Need to Know This Week

PEC #3 is Here!
Wednesday, Feb 6, 8:45am - 3pm
Our Parent Educator Conferences were designed to support you in your homeschooling journey! Come collaborate with other parents, learn from our staff and give yourself a pat on the back for all your hard work this year! We have carefully planned the workshop selections to give you both academic and social-emotional learning support. Workshop descriptions were emailed on Friday, and you can also find them HERE and HERE. You can sign up here for kid care and here to join our potluck lunch! Keep an eye out for Mykie's Coffee Truck (more info below) to keep the Kindness Movement going!

Coffee for a Cause!
Available at PEC Feb 6
Be on the look-out for Mykie's Coffee & Bakery truck by Mychal's Learning Place at PEC! Mychal's is located locally here in Hawthorne on Rosecrans Blvd and is a day program for kids and adults with special needs. They offer many services to the community, one of them being a coffee-and-bakery truck that they just opened up! We are excited to have them come and set up shop during our PEC on February 6, to help us take care of our coffee and delicious baked goods needs while supporting the independence of adults with developmental disabilities in our community! For more information about Mychal's Learning Place, please go to www.mychals.org.

Art Workshops with Mr. Mason
Tuesdays during February: 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 1-2:30 pm
In February only, our art teacher, Mr. Mason, has some extra time available on Tuesday afternoons and is offering workshops to our families. Like all of our workshops and classes, there are no fees or points--it's just free art class! Sign up here for one or all workshops.
Since we run 3 cohorts of families (W, M/Th, T/F) we know it's impossible to find dates that work for everyone, so T/F families, apologies that this conflicts with your child's on-campus time! We are hoping to have Thursday classes during a different month.
February 5: Paper Bag Puppet: Families will make fun puppets using paper lunch bags and construction paper!
February 12: Mardi Gras Masks: Make a colorful feathered mask to celebrate the holiday!
February 19: Wizard Wands: Ever wanted to be a wizard? You need a wand!
February 26: Hand Print Art: Print your hands in the style of Andy Warhol!

Film Festival Follow-up
We loved seeing so many friends at the FAN Film Festival Part 1 screening of the movie Wonder. The Kindness Movement shared with families a handout with conversation starters and prompts to take action and promote creativity. There are so many ways to incorporate this movie or the book into your homeschool or family life. You can find the handout here.
