From Our Dean of Students
Hello Families!

Several weeks ago, I flew to Pittsburgh as part of Da Vinci Schools' participation in the Transforming Learning Collaborative (TLC) in partnership with Schools That Can and Next Gen Learning Challenges. Michelle recently traveled to Chicago for the same reason, and Education Week just posted a blog about our work! You can learn more here.

I am looking forward to our second Book Club meeting around Part II of Dan Siegel's book, Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain! No need to have read the book or even attended our previous meeting. ;) I'm looking forward to seeing you there and continuing our conversation around the adolescent mind! Sign up here to participate THIS THURSDAY!

Okay, so now you've gotten started with project-based learning. Bravo! You and your child have created a mind map based on his/her passions--and you've gone down the rabbit hole! ;) Lots of great discussions happened, and you found some books... But now what???

The discussion in this workshop will center first on taking what you have already tried and reflecting on what worked and what needs tweaking. Then you'll have some guided planning time to outline next steps and share possible resources to support you in guiding your child in finishing a robust and engaging project!

*** Bring the work you and your child have already created to use as a springboard for your reflecting and planning!***

Hygiene Kits for the Homeless!
Homelessness is a big problem in Los Angeles. With 1 in 78 people struggling with homelessness, the DV Collaborative (grades 5-8) program has decided to make a difference. We are donating to an organization called MEND (Meeting Every Need with Dignity). MEND supports the homeless of Los Angeles and gets them the help they need, and MEND helps people who are homeless get back on their feet so they can live a whole happy life. The DV Collaborative program is now collecting hygiene items for hygiene kits for the homeless. You can donate an entire kit which must include a one quart zip lock bag, travel size tooth brush and tooth paste, dental floss, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, bar of soap, body lotion, large comb or small hairbrush, washcloth, chapstick, pack of cotton swabs, and hand sanitizer; or you can donate individual items. Please bring in your kits/items to the collection box in the office by March 19. Thank you!

Workshop: Creating a Robust Social-Emotional Learning Toolkit
A Three-Part Series: 3/4, 3/19 & 4/3 (Sign up here)

Janette will facilitate these informative discussions focused on content from the most recent Happily Family Virtual Conference offered by Jason and Cecilia Hilkey. Participants will have the opportunity to view presentations on a variety of important social-emotional learning topics and then spend some time discussing and sharing with fellow parent educators.

March 4th Workshop:
Cecilia and Jason Hilkey of Happily Family interview Dr. Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, author of Raising Your Spirited Child.

After watching the interview, we will touch on:
* How what we think about our child impacts our interactions.
* How flexibility and openness keep the lines of communication open.
*How to recognize the positive aspects and strengths of our spirited children.
*How we can help them to develop the skills they need to use those strengths in ways that serve them well.

A word about Dr. Mary Sheedy Kurcinka and context for the interview you will watch: Dr. Kurcinka has worked for decades with children and families, so her wisdom and experience shines through. In this interview we challenged her with three real life situations to see what she would do… We asked her about how to help the spirited child who has big feelings, how to help the highly distracted child get out the door in the morning, and how to help the child who likes a lot of routine and gets thrown off if things are changed.
