A Message from our Principal

Greetings Families,

First and foremost, a heartfelt and humble thank you for being part of our Connect family this year! I say it time and again--it is an honor and a privilege to be your principal and to raise my daughters by your side at this amazing school and within this passionate and compassionate learning community. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

There will be one final newsletter later this week with some information and reminders about next year. For those of you returning to us, please be on the look out. If your family is parting ways with us, whether because your child is graduating this week or because your educational journey takes you elsewhere, please know that your family's presence will be missed and we are grateful for the time we spent with you.

We are excited to send our 8th graders off to high school next year with a special graduation ceremony this Wednesday morning. You are each unique and powerful--we can't wait to celebrate you one last time! If your child is remaining with Connect for high school, we are so excited to continue our work together! If your child is heading off to a Da Vinci high school, private school, neighborhood school or other independent study program, we wish you the very best!

Lastly, I want to publicly acknowledge the tremendous hard work of our teacher, Darlene Wonggaew, and parent, Shawn Olson, on this year's yearbook! They created a beautiful book of memories for your children to enjoy. Thank you both for your hard work! Some of you have asked how you can purchase a copy now that you've seen how great it is! You can find newsletter archives on the Parent Educator Resource Site under the Resources tab. April 7 (and several others) mention how you can purchase a yearbook. Thanks!

DV Connect Odyssey of the Mind Update and Plans for Next Year
This past year twenty DV Connect students joined together to form three Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams that competed in the LA Basin Regional OM tournament on March 2nd. One team created their own Vegetable and Vehicle themed museum (The VVM), another took a deep dive into camouflage creating a creature that “hid” and mechanically changed in appearance in multiple different settings, and the other team built a vehicle that could carry several of the team members, fit in a suitcase and complete a number of different tasks, all with eight minute creative performances to show off their solutions. One of our teams even went on to compete in the state tournament on March 19th. The eleven families involved joined together to form a co-op that met once a week to train and prepare for the competition. OM is all about creative problem-solving and proved to be an incredible way to engage students in all sorts of learning including, science, technology, engineering, math, history, writing, art, design, performance and so much more. ?

For some quick details to learn more about what OM is check out this and this.

So many of us had such a blast that we’ve begun planning for next year. We’d like to pull together three to four teams for a weekly co-op again and are looking for a few more families to join us for the 2019/2020 school year. If you’ve got a kid who would enjoy being on a team, stretching their creative problem solving skills, competing and performing, we’d love to hear from you. It takes kids with all sorts of interests and specialties to form a well rounded team. Check out our website to find some additional information and fill out our intake form ASAP. We’re extending the June 1st application deadline a few days, but don’t delay.

Congrats on Last Friday's Tropical-Themed Middle School Dance!
Congratulations to the students and parents who created a memorable end-of-year dance for middle schoolers on Friday night! We heard the students had a great time and your hard work didn't go unnoticed!
