Greetings DVIA Families!

A Few Words From Our Director

Hello Everyone!

I feel honored to share an extraordinary example of the Habits of Heart and Mind that DVIA hopes to build in each student. On Friday night my husband and I took our daughters to see the New Shanghai Circus in Glendale. Before the show began, a member of the acrobatics troupe took the stage and explained that they would be unable to perform their regular 2-hour show because that morning their van full of costumes and props had been stolen from the parking lot... Nevertheless, he announced, they would do their best and hoped we would enjoy the show. For the next hour they not only delivered an inspiring and entertaining performance, but they exemplified so many of DVIA's habits:

They showed flexibility by using balls, ropes and hula hoops from a local store instead of their tried-and-true supplies.
They collaborated with each other to practice new routines with foreign materials and worked with a local Kung Fu studio to provide additional entertainment since so much of their routine just wouldn't work.
They gave themselves empathy when they made mistakes with wonky hula hoops, hardware store rope and oversized wine glasses (which a performer balanced on her hands and feet while turning from her back to stomach...wow!). And they trusted us to show them empathy rather than boo their mistakes or grumble at the shortened show.
And of course they persevered!

While I can easily find YouTube clips to show my children what the "real" New Shanghai Circus looks like, I could never duplicate the experience of a group of humble performers, in their jeans, yoga pants and t-shirts, doing their best despite misfortune.

My family's ride home was filled with wonderings about what happened and acknowledgements of the habits the performers demonstrated. The New Shanghai Circus gave my family a true gift this weekend; one better than the show we paid for. I hope that your next encounter with the unexpected may yield an opportunity to view the event from a "building habits" perspective.

Have a great week!

Tyler's Two Cents

tyler two cents Families,

Families, this Thursday and Friday will be our first Pizza/Spirit Day for 2nd semester. We are calling it" PaJamuary" and are encouraging students to wear their coziest school-appropriate pajamas to school.

This day is never a "sleeper" (get it?? ?) and the kids really enjoy dressing up! So send your kids to school with a few bucks for pizza and a pair of cozy PJs to help share in some school spirit!

Thanks and have a great week!
