Greetings DVIA Families!

A Few Words From Our Director

Hello Everyone!

It's already February and according to some of you, this is the time of year when you start thinking about this summer and next fall! Don't feel bad if you're more like me: thinking about next weekend feels like you're ahead of the game :)

So, to help those of you who plan early, I'd like to share the following vague but hopefully helpful details:

8th grade graduation: June 10th, 10am-12pm at the Hawthorne Memorial Center.

DVIA Summer Camp information will be available in the next few weeks (this is earlier than ever!). We are likely to hold 4 camp options/themes with a discount for multiple weeks and multiple campers. The hours will be approximately 12:00-3:00, M-Th during the weeks of June 15-July 9.

Summer school information will come in May. This is because our academic summer program is offered to students based on academic need and the services our summer program will provide. It is by invitation and for "intense intervention" purposes. It is not run in a project-based learning manner. It is likely to be during the morning hours (8 or 9 until noon), M-Th for the first three or four weeks of summer.

The 2015-2016 school year is likely to begin August 13th or 17th. Official dates will be released when the 2015-2016 calendar is approved (probably in March).

Please remember to check the calendar at the DVIA parent resource site.

Lastly, please regularly and thoroughly check your children for lice and nits (eggs). Live lice are hard to see. If you find nits (grayish eggs secured to the hair usually around the neck and ears) then your child is highly likely to have live lice. Treat the entire family and check often. We have 2 reported cases in 2 different cohorts and cores.

Have a great week!

Tyler's Two Cents

tyler two cents Families,

I've been spending some time this week looking into the mandated California assessments for the 2014-15 school year. As you may already know, the CST (California Standards Test) was eliminated for all subjects except Science for 5th and 8th grade during 2012-13 school year.

Last year the State piloted a series of new assessments called the Smarter Balanced Assessments (CAASSP is another acronym associated with these assessments). In the upcoming weeks, the DVIA staff will be working towards creating a schedule that will allow us to complete these mandated state tests with the least amount of impact on instructional time. In the meantime, feel free to visit the CAASSP website to learn more about these assessments.

Thanks and have a great week!
