Greetings DVIA Families!
A Few Words From Our Principal
Greetings and I hope you are enjoying this warm weather! I am super excited by the program we've developed for our third Parent Educator Conference (PEC) on Wednesday. You are going to be wowed by all the math support we are going to give you! We know it takes some coordinating to arrange to be there and we thank you for taking the time to learn new strategies to support your learner(s)!
Also, with the end of Work Journal #3 looming, I want to take a moment to remind you about a very important section of our DVIA Family Handbook
. Page 19 outlines DVIA's Independent Study Attendance Policy and Agreement and clarifies our requirements about missing work journal information and missed meetings. We have these rules in place to comply with state laws for independent study programs and in order to ensure we are continually monitoring student success in our program. We must enforce these rules to keep our charter.
When infractions occur, families receive a notice of non-compliance (a letter emailed with your electronic signature requested). Further incidents result in a second notice of non-compliance, which includes a mandatory meeting with an administrator to discuss supports and appropriate placement in our program. If a third non-compliance notice is necessary, this is sufficient indication that our program may not be a right fit for the family, and an evaluation will occur which could result in a notice of removal from our program.
We hope this will never apply to your family, but we have really noticed an increase in late or insufficient work journals and missed meetings. Please help us stay in compliance and thank you for reading this explanation of how our program works.
Thank you for being part of our DVIA family and enjoy your week!
From Our Dean of Students
Hi Families! As I mentioned last week, staff is getting ready for PEC 3, and it's going to be great! I've seen some of the prizes set to be raffled, and they are INCREDIBLE! Please remember to pack your own brown bag lunch and water bottle, and if you plan to take advantage of the childcare option, there are still a few spaces available! See more information below. We are excited to learn and think deeply about math with you this week!
On another note, large amounts of trash have been bubbling up on campus lately. Of course, the blustery winds don't help, but you can! Packing lunches with re-usable containers and aiming for trash-free lunches is always something we strive for at DVIA. Please help us keep our campus clean with trash-free lunches!
Have a great week!

Curriculum & Clothing Exchange!
During PEC #3
Do you have Curriculum Resources sitting around your house that you no longer need? Are your closets overflowing with gently-used outgrown clothing (polo shirts, Exhibition-wear, etc.)? Bring it all to PEC 3 this Wednesday for other DVIA families (clothing can be dropped off in a bin in the DVIA Lost & Found area on Monday and Tuesday). And stop by the exchange tables to see if there is something you could use.

Managing Student Stress
We are partnering with UCLA scientists to test whether a new computer program can help kids and teens better manage stress. This program has previously been tested with youth experiencing high levels of stress, and they now want to see whether it might also be helpful in building resilience and managing stress for ALL kids and teens.
Researchers hope that once this research is completed, the findings will benefit families, schools and the community. We are looking for kids and teens ages 10 to 17 to participate. All research activities occur at DVIA. If you are interested in learning more, please email Michelle Rozenman, Ph.D.
