Greetings, DVIA Families!
From Our Principal
Greetings Families,

Over the past few weeks, our Core 3 students and their teacher, Megan, have been working hard to create a classroom newspaper as part of their current project! Core 3 is excited to share the first edition of their classroom newspaper, Core 3 News. Students contributed to the newspaper by writing news stories about DVIA school events, science experiments, crafts, and much more. Their newspaper is an extension of their learning about media literacy and how to be a smart consumer of media. Please check out their newspaper HERE. Congratulations Core 3 on all your hard work writing, revising, editing, receiving and implementing feedback, and celebrating your publication!

From Our Dean of Students
Hello Families,

I hope you are enjoying the warm and sunny weather! I had an incredible time visiting Core 4's Exhibition, and am looking forward to Core 5's Science Literacy Exhibition today and tomorrow!

As a reminder, today was also the first day of state testing for our 3rd-8th grade students in both the Hybrid and Collaborative program. Michelle and I are confident that your students' experience will be the least impactful possible, due to the many strategies, tools, and support that their classroom teacher will provide during this experience! Please remember to help your student get plenty of rest, have a peaceful morning, and eat protein-rich breakfasts, and pack plenty of snacks for their school day!

I also must share that we were recently notified that the state of California released information stating that the 95% federal participation rate requirement for state testing will be included in the 2018 Dashboard release. The release of this information stated, "It is important to note that if schools or LEAs test less than 95 percent of the students enrolled during the testing window, their Academic Indicator results will be impacted negatively." This is the first time that our participation rate will be included in calculating our school's Academic Indicator and ultimately part of our school dashboard. I realize that this can sound very confusing. In short, our participation rate will now be added to our "school score" which is released to the public and used to determine what interventions a school might need on a state or federal level. In addition, state test participation is part of how our charter renewal is evaluated and a data point we are mandated to report. More than ever, it is crucial that we reach our 95% participation rate! If you have ANY questions about your student's participation in our state tests, please contact me ASAP.
What You Need to Know This Week

Kaitlin recently sent an e-mail regarding final opportunities to purchase this year's yearbook. Unlike in years past, there will not be a bulk inventory to purchase after yearbooks are printed. Only the number which are ordered will be printed! Please read that e-mail thoroughly and follow directions closely if you plan to order a yearbook for your child(ren).

Film Fest!
Wednesday, April 25, 3:30-4:45pm, Sascha's Room
Are you ready to see awesome movies and support our students' creativity? The students of the "Find Your Focus" enrichment class have been working hard on their movies, and now we need an audience to watch! Come on down for a treat! There will be snacks and drinks while watching the movies.

Want to join in the fun? Submissions are OPEN now through April 23! Sign up to let us know if you are coming and if you are submitting your own project:
  1. Go to the Signup Genius link and sign up in the submissions category. You don't need to upload anything now, but we need to know how many students will be screening.
  2. Upload your project onto the DVIA Vimeo account (Vimeo login: ktoon@dviaschools.org and password: FilmFest18) by the end of the day on April 23. In the description box, please include title of the project, brief synopsis, student's name, parent's name, and parent's contact info. We will delete this before the project is screened to keep it private.

Thank you so much!!!

Summer Camp
Online Registration is Open!
We are excited to announce DVIA's Summer Camp and hope your child(ren) will join us! Keep the learning and fun going even after school is out. We've created 8 different themes--a little something for everyone! A special note about the musical theater camp in July: the final performance will be on the morning of August 1st and students in both camps will perform for their own families, any other DVIA friends and families who want to attend, and it will be a "welcome back" performance for the staff, who will begin their professional development for the 2018-2019 school year that day! So much fun! Also, to make the registration process easy and convenient, we've created an Eventbrite for online sign up and payment! Thanks for joining us!
