Greetings DVIA Families!

A Few Words From Our Director

Hello Everyone!

A huge thank you to all the families who have already given so much to get our campus ready for the new school year. You've painted, scrubbed, organized, gardened, donated, mended and shown us your love. Thank you!!

Please pay particular attention to the blurb below about the Independent Study Enrollment Agreement. This is a mandate we must comply with as an Independent Study school and this form be returned dated on or before this Monday, August 17th. Thank you!

Lastly, I'd like to ask all families to consider adopting three "norms" that the DVIA staff does our best to practice in our daily lives: 1) assume positive intentions; 2) avoid triangulation; and 3) be kind, specific and helpful. Inevitably something will happen this year that causes frustration. It will happen to us all. As a staff, we try to do the following: before frustration swells to anger, we take a moment to remind ourselves that everyone in the DVIA community has positive intentions, we are all trying to do the right thing, we are all making huge sacrifices of our time and we are all committed to the education and well-being of our children. No one is intending harm.

Then, if further discussion needs to take place, we avoid triangulation. We go directly to the source rather than discussing with others in a negative, inflammatory or accusing manner. We try to do so in a kind, specific and helpful way. These norms have helped DVIA's staff family grow over the past four years and have trickled into our personal lives as well. We hope they do the same for you and help us to have a harmonious and productive year together.

This is going to be a great year! Thank you for joining us!

A Message From Kaitlin

Hi Families!

In addition to the time, work and donations spent on beautifying our campus, we appreciate all that you've done to make sure our teachers have what they need in order to begin the school year successfully with students! We are anxiously awaiting your arrival this week, and can't wait to see you!

Don't forget, Core 4-5 families who would like to meet about camp should find me in the Collab Lab on Monday and Tuesday at 2:45pm. See you then! I will also send the information via email.
Have a great week!

What you need to know this week

Very Important - We Need Independent Study Agreements Signed Before School Starts!
You should have received an email from Lynne Yoon (lyoon@davincischools.org) and Cudasign so that you can sign your student's Independent Study Enrollment Agreement. Students are not considered enrolled until this form is signed.

This agreement must be signed by both the student and a parent and dated 8/17/15 or earlier. If you can't access the digital copy, hard copies are available in the front office.

This is a state funding/auditor mandate. Please help us get off to a good start for the year!

Parking & Drop-Off Reminders
Curbside drop-off and pick-up is available in front of our main door each day from 9:00-9:15 am and 3:15-3:30 pm. During these times, cars in the lot directly in front of school should drive northbound only (that is, toward 135th). The lane is very narrow and for safety's sake, we need all cars traveling slowly and in the same direction.

Students should be on campus and ready to start the morning promptly at 9:15. Please do not park in the fire lanes or other illegal spaces. Extra parking is available behind DVIA at Dana Middle School, or on the side streets. Additionally, please do not park directly in front of the Wiseburn district office at the south end of our parking lot. They have visitors too! Thanks!

Next Week's Parent Educator Conference #1
Weds. 8/26 9:15-2:15
Hawthorne Memorial Center, 3901 El Segundo Blvd.
We are pleased to offer an exciting day of DVIA-sponsored professional development for parent educators. Workshop topics will include: Five Powerful Questions, Arts Integration, Real-World Writing, Planning Rich Field Trips, Compassionate Communication and more! You will see the full conference schedule in the next newsletter.

Wondering what to do with homeschool resources your children have outgrown? Bring them to PEC! We will have a Resource Exchange table where you can leave something for others and find something for yourself.

We are offering the option of purchasing lunch from one
of our local faves, Cafe Rio. You MUST purchase a lunch ticket at the front office this week. Tickets are $10 (cash, check, cc). Lunches from home are welcome, too!

See you there! Email Janette with any questions.

Curriculum Resource Distribution
Thursday, Aug. 20 and Friday, Aug. 21
@ 8:45-9:45 and 3:00-4:00
Requested supplemental curriculum materials will be available for pick up in front of the school. You should have received an email with curriculum information at your family's primary contact address this weekend. Please contact Janette if you did not. Remember to include your child's name and grade.

Grass Play
Thank you again to the families who came to help re-grow our grass this summer.

Our grass is still working hard to grow in fully, so we'd like to ask you to please have conversations with your child(ren) about treading lightly on the grass, and giving it the best possible chance for re-growth. We know that this will be difficult for our students who enjoy running on our field, and we appreciate your support in having those conversations prior to the first day of school.

Emergency Kit Time Again!
It's time to stock our emergency bins with your child's individual emergency kit for the 2015-2016 school year! Every year we collect a kit for each student in case of an emergency, hoping that we never have to use them.

Please make sure to bring packed kits (in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag), with completed emergency forms on your first day of school. Use this link for a list of items to include.

We are looking for a few volunteers to assist with organizing emergency kits on Monday and Tuesday. If you can help out before and after school by monitoring the emergency kit bins and checking off names, please contact our fabulous new receptionist, Micah by email or call the office at 310-725-5800. Thank you!

Can You Help Core 2?
Core 2 is revamping their lunch and snack space (it looks awesome already!) and would like some new lunch tables and chairs. Can you help? You can find the tables at this link ($39.99 ea) and the chairs at this link ($14.99 ea). Any color!

We would also love some baby wipes for easy cleanup. Thank you!!

A Message from FAN!
EVERY family is part of our Family Action Network (FAN), so be on the lookout for communications via email, Facebook, the Yahoo group and at PEC for how you can find YOUR pefect service opportunity this year! Thanks in advance for all the FAN-tastic ways you'll support DVIA this year!

Coming Up...Mark Your Calendars!

Parent Educator Conference #2 will take place on September 30th (new date!) from 9:15am-2:15pm. We are hoping to hold PEC #3 on February 10th and are pending confirmation of the location.

Have a great week!
~Your DVIA Team
