I hope you enjoyed another great week of homeschooling!

Please keep an eye out tomorrow (Monday) for a newsletter specifically about enrichment. We have been reflecting and fine tuning and want to let you know about a few things. Thank you!

On Wednesdays, I host a webinar discussion class with parents and I want to share what we've watched and talked about so far. Two weeks ago, we spent some time thinking through Sir Ken Robinson's Changing Education Paradigms. This is a video that Da Vinci staff have watched and discussed since our organization first developed in 2009. It has been foundational in how we re-think education, and I hope you find it just as interesting. Last week we watched a TED Talk about using rituals/habits to build connection (find it here). I shared with the group that while I personally did not particularly connect with the speaker, I found her message meaningful. It helped me remember as a mom and as someone responsible for the culture of our school (for staff, for students, for families) that intentional efforts, meaningful rituals, celebrations and habits help build the connective tissue of a family, a school or any other social structure. I had a great conversation with my own family that night and my children and I resurrected our nightly routine that had fallen by the wayside for far too long. We've been enjoying our connecting time and I thought that if the video speaks to any of you and helps you re-focus on a meaningful ritual, it is worth sharing. Hello Families! I hope you enjoyed your long weekends and stayed cool in the heat! I'm glad it's finally starting to cool down--regardless of temperature, it's important that students come to campus equipped with a re-usable water bottle in order to stay hydrated!

This week, we practiced our emergency preparedness by holding earthquake drills on Thursday and Friday! All students and staff participated in a meaningful way indicating that we are ready for any (unlikely) emergency that we might encounter! If you'd like to know more about our emergency procedures, feel free to reach out! Pets on/in front of Campus
We have noticed lately that dogs have been accompanying families on campus, especially during drop off/pick up. While we enjoy seeing four-legged family members, we must ask that our campus (including the front of school) remain pet-free for the safety of everyone, including animals. An exception, of course, is for service animals who are working. Thank you for your assistance in this matter!

FAN News
Make sure to check the FAN page of the parent resource educator website to find information about FAN. We are still looking for room parents, event chairs, and volunteers to help put together FANtastic events for the school. If you have any questions, please reach out to Visit the SignUp Genius for Year-Round FAN Volunteers to find opportunities to get involved!
Pizza and Spirit Days Are Back!
Approximately every 5 weeks, we hold a FAN-sponsored pizza day on Thursday and Friday where students can purchase Domino's pizza for lunch! The proceeds from pizza lunch sales directly benefit our FAN events throughout the year. While you can purchase pizza for $3/slice and beverages for $1/cup on each pizza day,
we are offering families the opportunity to prepay for the entire year at a discounted price! This saves you money AND helps us better estimate how much pizza to order! Take advantage of this opportunity by submitting your completed form and payment to the front office by Friday, September 15th.

FANtastic Event Updates!
Last week, DVIA parents and students hosted two great FAN-facilitated events! Thanks so much to everyone who participated in the FAN sponsored DVIA Cares Hurricane Harvey Bake Sale. In the course of 4 days, DVIA raised close to $400.00 to be split evenly between the Red Cross and the Humane Society. So whether you baked, sold or bought (or even straight out donated) - the event could not have been successful without an engaged community of caring people. Thank you to Johanna, Rachel and their daughters, Viktoria and Penelope, for organizing this event!

Thank you as well to Zaara and her mom Tasneem, who organized our first Skate Night at the Toyota Center! Thanks to your participation, they raised $440* and over 80 DVIA students hit the ice while parents mingled together around the rink. Lots of new families attended as well--a great way to build connections for students! Thank you Zaara and stay tuned for our next skate night on October 21st, organized by Camilla!

*Funds from Skate Night were donated to DVIA to help support the funding gap between what the state provides to a public school such as ours and the actual operating costs to run our program.

Da Vinci Launches New Website
Our new Da Vinci website has launched at!! Check it out!! There are many new features suggested by Da Vinci families, staff, and other key stakeholders. One of the features we are most excited about is our new online event calendars that bring all Da Vinci and Wiseburn school calendars, as well as athletics and arts, into one central location. You can view and filter calendars, subscribe to them, add them to your personal calendar, forward to friends and family, and be notified of changes when they occur via text and/or email.
