Greetings, DVIA Families!
A Few Words from Our Principal

Greetings Families!

I had the privilege of joining 6th-8th grade humanities teacher Dan Katz, 5th grade teacher Rita Bouchard, Homeschool Collaborative 3rd-7th grade teacher Ethel Brown and parent Andrew Enriquez for 3 awesome days at Astro Camp with our 5th and 6th graders this past week. A huge thank you to our chaperones who gave tremendous care, support and round the clock fun to our students on the trip! Our students were awesome! Thank you for sharing your kiddos with us! So what did we do at Astro Camp? Too many things to mention but to name a few: searched for micro-meteorites (my personal favorite activity), climbed the "Power Pole," went ziplining, built and launched rockets, created protective cases for Mars Rovers (water balloons) and launched them, hiked through the rain to find out dorms, viewed stars and took a night hike, and so much more!
I'm excited to join our 7th and 8th graders on tomorrow's Catalina Island trip!
Thanks and have a great week!

From Our Dean of Students
Wow! By the looks of all the smiles (and dirty clothes), I think it's safe to say that Astro Camp was a success! Thank you to Dan, Michelle, Rita, Ethel, and DVIA parent Andrew Enriquez for taking time away from your work and your families to accompany our kiddos on this trip! I can't wait to hear about camp from our students who attended, and am looking forward to sending our 7th/8th graders to Catalina on Monday!

Some of you have asked how you can learn more about your student's state test scores from the spring! The California Department of Education has created this site to help you understand those scores.

Do you and your child(ren) spend time before or after school using our outdoor play equipment? If so, we need help in reminding ALL students that while the imagination playground and the plastic puzzle pieces are stored on the cement, those toys are available to play with ONLY on the grass. Safety is our first priority, and we also want to be respectful of the space we share with the Wiseburn District Office. Please help us keep the cement space clean, safe, and organized!

Thank You!
What You Need to Know This Week!

Book Club #2 with Michelle

Save the Date!
Student-Led Conferences for Hybrid Program
Tuesday Oct 4 and Thursday Oct 6
For families in the Homeschool Hybrid program, please remember to sign up with your child's teacher for an SLC and to homeschool your child both days. There is no after-school enrichment Tues/Th, but there is regular Wednesday enrichment on Oct 5.

Fall Break
Friday Oct 7
Last year we tried our first "Fall Break" and you told us you loved it and that it was much needed! It's back on Friday, Oct 7th. No school, homeschool, or enrichment. Celebrate the hard work you and your student have done, and enjoy a lovely long weekend! Try to do something that revitalizes and refreshes you. October is a dipping point in the year for all educators. The pain is real so take care of yourselves!

DVIA Film Festival Part 2: Kid Made Movies
Saturday Nov 5
The next installment of our year-long film festival will be featuring movies made by YOU!
It's time to get those creative juices flowing and your cameras rolling. Movies in all states of creation are welcome, from works-in-progress to the final cut. To help our planning, please sign up now if you plan on submitting something to the festival. This is to get an idea of how many participants we should expect, not a final commitment.
The Film Fest Crew is putting together workshops to inspire your creativity and support your film making. Please sign up so that we know approximately how many people are interested and can plan accordingly.
Do you have any special skills that you would like to share with our community? Sign up and Jennifer will contact you.
Support from Happily Family
Are you having struggles with your kids about homeschooling, chores, or sibling issues? Are feelings running high? Want more support with Compassionate Communication? Cecilia and Jason Hilkey of Happily Family have Compassionate Communication videos, support, and live help for you. This is a free resource offered to our DVIA family! Sign in here to get access. (If you signed up last year, please sign up again. This is a new system.)
Curriculum Corner
Have you or your student built a board on the Discovery Education resource site? Boards are a great tool for studentscurriculum and home educators alike to display videos, text, and pictures about a science- or social-studies-related topic. You can learn more by logging into your account and watching one of the many helpful video tutorials.
