Greetings, DVIA Families!
A Few Words from Our Principal

Hello Families!

I'd like to take a moment to remind you to please take 5 minutes to complete our Fall Family Survey. Your input and feedback on this survey are crucial aspects of our reflection and continued growth at DVIA. We are committed to creating a community that works for our students, families and staff, and we want to hear from ALL of you! This is your opportunity to share what is working for you and your family, what is challenging for you, and any ideas you may have for the future of our community. While completing this survey, please remember to keep your ideas kind, specific and helpful (key elements of Ron Berger's feedback model). Thank You!

We are excited to inform you that DVIA's Parent Educator Resource Site has undergone a transformation! Both the original and new website were created and maintained by DVIA parents for the past 5 years. Tasneem has led the charge and was joined by Ahnnya. Now Lachmi has joined forces with them and together they have spent considerable time re-inventing the website so that it is better than ever! Thank you ladies for your hard work! The new site can be found HERE. Check out what's new and improved!

Lastly, no word yet on Kaitlin's baby but she will be here very soon :) Kaitlin thanks you for all the well wishes!

Have an excellent week!

What You Need to Know This Week!
Film Fest Workshop, "Film Theory"
Monday Oct 17, 5-7 pm
Let's get together and talk about what makes a great movie great. We'll look at a couple of clips from live-action and animated films and break down different techniques that the filmmakers used effectively. We'll also talk about how you can incorporate these techniques into your own filmmaking at home! RSVP HERE.

Pastries with the Principal

Film Fest Workshop, "The Language of Film"
Saturday Oct 22 and 29, 10am-12pm
This workshop will provide our children with fundamental film production skills that will assist them in their creation of fun, entertaining and informative visual content. This workshop will focus on live-action filmmaking techniques and will cover terminology commonly used in film production and tools needed to create films. It will culminate in cameras rolling and each member of the workshop shooting their own one- to two-minute project using the techniques and skills acquired through the workshop. Sign up  HERE if you are interested in participating (limit of 20 participants each Saturday).

DVS Movie Night
Thursday Oct 20, 6pm
Da Vinci Science's Leadership students want to invite DVIA students to a movie screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas! The screening will take place from 6:00-9:00 on October 20th on the Da Vinci Science blacktop (at the back of the DVS campus). Bring blankets and low-back chairs! Admission is FREE and proceeds from food purchases will support the DVS Leadership team. Please remember this is a Da Vinci Science event--the DVIA campus is not available at that time and no supervision is provided. Hope to see you there!

L.A. County Science Fair
Nov 1 pre-approvals due
Calling all Middle Schoolers (6th- 7th-8th grade)! This is the first year DVIA will be participating in the LA County Science Fair (March 23-26, 2017). Please go to the Los Angeles County Science & Engineering Fair website and check it out! The deadline to submit pre-approval is November 14th!! Please go on the website to see what projects need pre-approval. For example, if your child will swab door knobs and use petri dishes, it needs pre-approval. If your child might send out a survey, it needs pre-approval. Michelle Rainey is our site coordinator and if you have any questions, please contact Sascha. Submit your pre-approvals to Sascha by November 1st so there is enough time to review the projects and then submit them to the  LA science fair by Nov 14th. This is an amazing opportunity for our DVIA community. Up to 13 projects can be entered in the fair per middle school and 3 of them can be group projects (2-3 kids).

Speaking of Pizza Lunches...
Our monthly pizza lunches at DVIA are starting in just a couple of weeks and we need your help!

Can you be part of an on-going team who supports pizza lunches on either M/Th or T/F? This team will come to campus on the scheduled pizza day from 11am-12:45pm. We need help with setting up, collecting money, serving pizza during the 2 lunch periods (for older and younger kiddos), and cleaning up. We have 3-4 volunteers for each cohort and need a few more!

If you can join the team, your help is appreciated by pizza eaters everywhere! Please email Jennifer.
