Greetings DVIA Families!

A Few Words From Our Director

Hello Everyone!

There are so many exciting things happening these days! Picture Day was a success...we will be sharing information very soon about how you can access and order your child(ren)'s photos. Thank you to so many families for participating in our Rubios fundraiser. We saw many families connecting over a meal and enjoying some fun times together. We have more community building events planned for the near future so please read the newsletter carefully each week and mark your calendar.

Did you know that October is one of the hardest months of the year for educators? That means for parent educators too! It's quite possible that just as you were starting to settle in and feel like maybe you were hitting a stride, you found yourself facing a slump. A lack of creativity and inspiration or a mounting sense of frustration or disillusionment can be quite common among students and educators at this point in the school year. Sometimes just knowing this is a common experience can be a comfort. So if you're feeling like you're in a rut, that's okay. And if you're not, well that's even better! Just don't be surprised if it creeps up on you.

Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Visit the Homeschool Adventures tab or the other postings found in the DVIA Resource Site.
  • Reflect on something that worked well earlier in the year but you stopped doing it for some reason. Can you mimic that time again?
  • Try infusing a fun brain break such as GoNoodle into your daily routine (it's free!). And do it WITH your kids!
  • Use song lyrics to inspire close reading and inference skills while providing reading material (don't forget to sing along too) the kids will enjoy reading! You could use the same tune to make up your own song lyrics, find literal and figurative language, discover a new topic for non-fiction research, find other songs or works of literature with similar themes and so much more!
  • Make a plan to meet for coffee/tea with a homeschool buddy and share strategies.
  • Give yourself time each day to practice mindfulness or some other form of relaxation that grounds you. This can be done during homeschooling time as well! We use Inner Explorer at school but some free mindfulness clips can also be found here.
  • Do something unexpected like "Opposite Day," "Backwards Day" or even "Yes Day"!
  • Establish a period of time when the kids take over the homeschool time.
  • Spice up your homeschool environment a bit... rearrange things, look for lost or cast aside materials...even giving students a place to display their work (using painter's tape of course) that was previously off limits could inspire them.
  • Try using video writing prompts or exploring a new resource site.

I hope these ideas were helpful!

Thank you for your support and enjoy your week.

Tyler's Two Cents

tyler two cents Families,

Can you believe that October is almost over?? Well not really, but it's fun to think that it is (at least in the world of education).

Our next Pizza/Spirit Days will be Thursday, October 30th and Friday, October 31st. For this Spirit Day, we are inviting students to wear their Halloween costumes at school (for those of you new to DVIA, we haven't done this in a while so returning families are likely to be delighted).

If your student decides to dress up for this Spirit Day, please select a costume that does not support violence, is not very scary (remember that our school has kinder through 8th grade students and many toddler siblings who drop off and pick up with their families), and is appropriate for the school day setting. Dress code parameters around length of skirts/shorts/dresses, revealing tops and close-toed shoes still apply! We look forward to these fun-filled days and as always, we appreciate your discretion when helping your kids participate in these all school events.

Have a great week!
