NicoleAssisi Hello Da Vinci Families,   

  

I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving break! While I don't miss the snowy Germany winters, it has been nice to enjoy the cooler days and nights. As the weather changes, we always have an influx of lost and found items. Please remember to write your child's name on the inside tags of their sweaters/jackets and remember to check the lost and found every now and then!

 

As the semester ends, we are excited for our 2nd annual Winter Jubilee. Come and join your Da Vinci friends and celebrate the first semester of school. It has been an amazing journey and ending the calendar year with food and friends is always magical. The Jubilee is the Wednesday before the break and more details are below.  

 

The end of the semester also means time for Presentations of Learning and reflections of what the year has been like thus far. While the POLs in June will be Panel presentations for all Cores, at the semester our POLs will look a little different for each level. Make sure to check in with your teachers to see how your learner will end the semester with a bang!

2013-2014 Enrollment Information Is Available

Do you know a family that would like to join us at DVIA? Admission information for the 2013-14 school year is now available. 

 

Information meetings for new families are mandatory and will be held on:

Tuesday, December 4, 2012 | 6-7:30 pm
Tuesday, January 22, 2013 | 6-7:30 pm
Saturday, February 9, 2013 | 10-11:30 am

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 | 6-7:30 pm  

Information, including a downloadable application, can be found on the Da Vinci website. The Priority Application Deadline is March 1, 2013. 

 

OUR ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY & Chevron is matching your donations!

 
Prop 30 has passed and we are not looking at major mid-year cuts. Yay! Unfortunately, we are still up against a $1000 per student burden that has accrued over the last four years.

We need your help! Da Vinci Schools' Annual Giving Campaign is our top fundraising priority and the fundraiser we ask EVERY family to support. This year our goal is to raise $175K.

We are excited to announce that Chevron is helping YOUR contribution go a long way. Every donation and pledge to the Annual Giving Campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Chevron up to $50,000!!

Pledges must be made by Dec. 31 and paid by June 1, 2013 in order to be eligible for the Chevron match.

Please give what you can. Sometimes grants and foundation donations depend on 100% participation, even if individual donations are modest. Every gift makes a difference!

Family Action Network (FAN) News

Family Educational Choice Preserved In LAUSD
On November 13th, the LAUSD voted to reject a proposal to limit parent choice by limiting the growth of charter public schools. More than 1500 parents turned out on the morning of the vote to rally against the resolution.
 
LAUSD is not our school district, but it is important that families stand together to support choice and innovation in our public schools. A big thank you to all our families who called, emailed or attended the rally to show their support!

January Book Club

Mindset by Carol Dweck
Dweck's book shows how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that can impact every aspect of life. This book is a great read for your holiday downtime, but you are invited to join us for our discussion, whether you've read the book or not.
 
Winter Jubilee & Spring Talent Show Volunteers Needed
Our FAN Events Chair is looking for volunteers to lead the charge for our Winter Jubilee (12/19) and our Spring Talent Show (tentatively in March). Please contact Lisa Mathis at mathis1986@yahoo.com if you can help.

The Whole Brain Child Workshop
Wednesday, December 5th | 6 pm - 7:30 pm
This workshop with Kelly Ann will walk you through the 12 strategies of neuropsychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel and parenting expert Tina Bryson set forth in their book. The book explains the new science behind the wiring of children's brains and how they mature. These strategies help turn outbursts, arguments and fears into chances to integrate the brain and foster growth. The book is available in the office, but please feel free to join us, even if you haven't read it.

Help Portrait  
Wednesday, December 1 | 10 am-4 pm, in the Forum
Da Vinci Science is holding an amazing event and we would love for you to participate and spread the word!  Help Portrait is founded by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart and it is a community of photographers who are coming together across the world to use their photography skills to give back to their local community.  They are finding families who would like their pictures taken and giving them just that...for free!  When the photos are ready, they are given to the families, not used for the photographer's portfolio or for any other means.  It's just about giving back. We hope you can participate or know someone who can!
