Greetings DVIA Families!
A Few Words From Our Principal
My apologies for breaking the Sunday morning ritual of our newsletter. I've been fighting the cold that many of you and your children have been wresting with. On a health-related note and as we enter flu season, please remind your kiddos to wash their hands frequently (especially after using the restroom, blowing or wiping their nose, etc) and if your child has signs of an active cold, please refrain from sending them to school. The most concise advice I've found is here. I know it's hard to keep your child home with school only being 2 days and work schedules! We want to keep as many kiddos healthy as possible!
I hope all of you are enjoying a reflective day off today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. We live in an amazingly diverse society and in my humble opinion, DVIA provides yet another layer to that diversity. Families from over 40 zip codes, scattered across Los Angeles County, push through traffic every week to bring their children to Da Vinci Innovation Academy. We arrive with a variety of needs, desires and philosophies, and we come together to form a cohesive, respectful and empathetic community. Thank you for choosing to join us on this journey!
Tyler's Two Cents
Through the end of February we will be focusing school-wide on the Habit of Empathy. We define empathy as having the ability to understand another person's experiences, perspectives and emotions.
Of all the DVIA habits, empathy is the one that can lead to some really in-depth conversations with your children about how they view the world and their everyday lives. Please look for opportunities at home to have conversations about and model what empathy looks like and how each of us can actively work to empathize with others. This can be done through reading stories, watching movies, examining historical events, etc.
Please email me with pictures to serve as visual documentation, along with a short description, which we can post with our Habits display to serve as a tangible example to kids of what empathy looks like. Please email me your pictures and blurbs by Friday, January 31st.

Good To Know!!
Have you noticed our "new" space on campus? Our new Collab Lab is located outside the Core 1 classroom door. This space is intended to extend both the classroom learning space and the home learning space. On-campus students (individually and in groups) can work there independently or seek out a staff member for extra support in project or other class work. Parents are also invited to use this space to work with their students.
In conjunction with the new Lab, Janette is available (by appointment) to meet with parent/student pairs to help parents learn new teaching strategies and approaches or get past "stuck points." We are in the process of stocking the Lab with resources and supplies, including iPads and laptops.
Mark your calendars! Coming up soon:
