Greetings DVIA Families!
A Few Words From Our Principal
Thank you for joining us at PEC 3! Please calendar April 27th for our final PEC, which will count as WJ 5 for 2-day families and of course our full-time independent study families are welcome and encouraged to attend!
We appreciate that over 75% of our families attended PEC 3!!! Thank you! If you are in the 2-day program and missed PEC, please read the blurb below and choose one of the three makeup workshops to attend. We hate sending those pesky non-compliance letters so please, please, please attend a makeup workshop and also make sure to turn in your work journal(s) on time, complete and with all signatures!
If you attended PEC but missed one of the three workshops offered below, you may also attend!
Thank you for being part of our DVIA family and enjoy your week!
From Our Dean of Students
We hope that you are enjoying your long weekend! In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I have many appreciations to share with you! We had an incredible time at PEC #3 with you, and want to appreciate all attendees for their participation. We hope that you walked away feeling inspired and renewed to tackle math learning at home. :)
We'd also like to appreciate our guest speakers, Wendy Creek, Helen Chan, and Carolee Hurtado! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
Finally, we'd like to appreciate our donors who contributed to our raffle prizes and our afternoon pick-me-up station! These are great community partnerships who offer awesome opportunities for our students!
Have a great week!

Did You Miss PEC #3?
This year, Parent Educator Conferences count as work journal meetings for 2-day program families. Parent educators (in the 2-day program) who missed PEC #3 will need to make-up that face-to-face time in order to remain compliant with our Independent Study Enrollment Agreement. We are offering repeats of three PEC workshops in order to help all families with math support. If you are in the 2-day program and missed PEC #3, please plan on attending one of the three workshops below:
- Number Talks with Rita and Nancy on Wed. 2/17 @ 1:30 in Megan's room (best for grades 5-8)
- Shaping Mathematical Mindsets with Kelly Ann on Thurs. 2/18 @ 3:30 in Darlene's room (grades k-8)
- Number Talks and Word Problems with Robin on Friday 2/19 in Robin's room @ 3:30 (grades k-3)

Managing Student Stress
We are partnering with UCLA scientists to test whether a new computer program can help kids and teens better manage stress. This program has previously been tested with youth experiencing high levels of stress, and they now want to see whether it might also be helpful in building resilience and managing stress for ALL kids and teens. All research activities occur at DVIA. If you are interested in learning more, please email Michelle Rozenman, Ph.D. or call (310) 794-2215.
Feeling Artsy? We Need Help Finishing Our Mural
We need your help! We want to finish the mural on the front of our building. If you can help (adults only for this phase), please call DVIA parent PeQue Brown (310) 626-2353.
At PEC 3 last Wednesday, one of the messages we heard was how important it is for students to engage in visual math
. ST Math is an online program that immerses students in visual/spatial mathematics. All DVIA students have ST Math
accounts. We encourage you to use this resource. Check in with your student's teacher if you have questions about logging in.
