Greetings Families!

I truly enjoyed seeing the variety of science fair projects our students developed! Thanks for everyone who participated and a huge thanks to Dana Holman and Tina Brogi for their organizational efforts! I hope the DVIA Science Fair becomes an annual tradition! Many parents commented that it was a great opportunity for their children to practice Exhibition and POL-like skills.

I have the pleasure of announcing that our Core 1 teacher, Kelly Ann, had her baby on Friday! Jocelyn Jean Sassone is doing well and Kelly Ann and her husband are over the moon! Thank you for all your well-wishes.

Lastly, I want to give you a facilities update. First of all, the new high school building is on schedule to open in August. At that time, Da Vinci Science, Design and Communications will move in together, along with the Da Vinci Schools central office and the Wiseburn Unified School District. You can keep up to date on the high school facility HERE.

So what's in store for DVIA!?!? We will remain on our current campus for the 2017-2018 school year. But there is some new information to share: First, this summer we will return the "bungalow classrooms" we rent and move into some of the permanent classrooms at Da Vinci Science. The classrooms affected are the middle school rooms (Dan, Sascha and Nancy), the portable bathrooms at the back of campus (we will use the bathrooms only feet away on the current high school side), Kene and Theresa's bungalow, and eventually, in October, the Collaborative classroom at the front of campus (until October, the Collaborative Program will continue using their current classroom and will also use another classroom inside of campus on the high school side). We will also be able to take down some fencing separating us from the current high school campus to give our students a much larger outdoor space, including the amphitheater area on the other side of the fence near the sand box. Yay! We are still working out some exact logistics and more information will be available at the end of the school year. But for now, yay for more space and a more centralized and cohesive campus!

Two more things to share: Next year and beyond, DVIA will be co-located with Da Vinci Extension and Da Vinci RISE. We will have separate campuses, but we will share a larger facility. Next year, those programs will move into the central Da Vinci Science campus. Similar to how we have been co-located with DVS for the past 6 years, we will not share outdoor space or classrooms with the RISE or Extension programs. There will be fencing and boundaries that separate the programs. I have worked closely with Kim Merritt and Kari Croft, principals of the Extension and RISE program, for many years. They are amazing educators are we are so excited to work together on a campus! Fun Fact: For the past two years, DVIA has provided unpaid and paid internships to over 20 DV Extension students and we have hired 5 of them as academic coaches. You may have heard your kiddos talk about Savanah, Samiyah, Nate, Jacob or Karen. We love working with these young men and women, many of whom now aspire to become educators!

Lastly, for the 2018-2019 school year (only a little over a year away!), DVIA will relocate to what is currently the Da Vinci Design campus (located next to Del Aire Park approximately 1 mile away). This will be an exciting move and you will hear about it quite a bit next year. We will start organizing "Family Work Days" throughout next year to help get the campus ready for our arrival in August of 2018.

Hello Families!
We hope you enjoyed the FAN Science Fair this weekend and are looking forward to the FAN Talent Show on May 2nd! I can't wait to see the many talents our students have been working hard to showcase. :)

Speaking of talents, I want to share a HUGE congratulations to the cast and crew of this past week's performance of Beauty and the Beast! It was such a pleasure to see our students showcase their best acting, dancing, and singing skills. Well done, actors! Thank you to the staff at Infinite Learning for supporting our students!

As a final reminder, our 3rd through 8th grade students will begin state testing this week. Please support your learners in eating and packing protein-filled healthy breakfasts and lunches and getting plenty of rest! You may even want to remind them of mindfulness strategies they've learned to help stay calm and focused. ;)

Kid Care:
Signing up here will hold your space, but your sign up is not complete until you pay at the front office. Payment is $5 per session, per student. The morning session runs from 8:45am-11:45am and the afternoon session runs from 11:45pm-2:30pm. Please adhere to the drop-off and pick-up times.
You are welcome to sign up for both sessions if needed. This is a first-come, first-served sign-up, so it's recommended that you sign up and pay as quickly as possible. Each session will cap at 50 students. Please send a snack, water and a lunch (if your child will be attending both sessions). Also, students may bring board games and homeschool assignments/activities. Sign up HERE to reserve your spot!

Physical Fitness Testing!
Our 5th and 7th grade students participate in the CA Physical Fitness Test each year as part of the California State Testing. Here is a link to more info from the state. (It should be noted that at DVIA, we participate in the PACER, Curl Up, Push Up, BMI, Trunk Lift, and Shoulder Stretch.)

We will be holding our Physical Fitness test the week of May 8th, from 2:00pm-3:00pm. On Monday/Tuesday, we will be participating in the PACER, and on Thursday/Friday we will complete the other exercises.

I am excited to share that Nick Parrino from Infinite Learning will be administering the test, which will be waaaay more fun than if I were to administer it. ;) Please make sure that your student has his/her water bottle and comfortable clothing during this week. Tennis shoes should be worn on Monday/Tuesday!

What's Cookin' in the Homeschool Kitchen!?
A huge congratulations goes to the Masterminds robotics team, comprised of three DVIA students (Noah Chan, Tensaye Ballard, and Xavier Ballard) and two previous DVIA students (Natalie Wallis and Jacob Wallis)! They had the privilege of representing Los Angeles at the FIRST Lego League World Championship in Houston, TX, this past week. They competed with 108 of the best teams from around the world and met students from countries like: Brazil, Israel, Australia, China, Chile, Nigeria....over 40 different countries in all! During this robotics season, there were over 32,000 teams from around the world who participated! Our students worked extremely hard for eight months to not only design and develop their robot, but to also design and develop a real solution to help animal and human interactions. Their project focused on rehabilitating animals impacted by inland oil-spills, and was shared with over 30 industry experts. All of the experts said that their innovation is needed, practical, and well-thought out. This dedication, hard-work, and creativity earned them the Third Place-Innovative Solution Project Award. It is amazing that of all of the teams in the world this team rose to the top! We are so proud of their perseverance and commitment to hard work and excellence! Way to go Masterminds!!!!
