Greetings, DVIA Families!
A Few Words from Our Principal
I really enjoyed hanging out with you at the Opening Social/Film Festival yesterday! Thanks for bringing such a positive, collaborative spirit to our events! And a huge thank you to parents Jennifer Racusin, Julie Manz, Kary Kika, Joanne Wijesundera, Aishat Hasati and Lachmi Malhotra for all your hard work making this event happen! If you couldn't attend but want to recreate the event for your family, you can view the film fest playlist and a list of extension films. This event was one of limitless ways you can incorporate DVIA's Habits of Heart and Mind into your family and homeschool discussions.
I also want to thank all of you who attended our first meeting of book club for parent educators! I appreciate the opportunity to spend an hour sharing thoughts with you. We had a total of 30 attendees on Thursday and Friday. If you couldn't make it but still want to join in, you can! It's not an exclusive club and the point is to connect, have fun and inspire new ideas and practices. I learned a few things that I'm looking forward to trying with my family! Our next book club is September 29th and 30th (all dates are already on the calendar tab of the Parent Educator Resource Site). Sign up HERE so I know approximately how many to expect. The focus of our discussion will be chapters 3-5 of How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk. Lastly, during one of the discussions, words for feelings was discussed. Here are two lists that may be helpful: feelings inventory and needs inventory.
Lastly, please attend our Scooter's Jungle event and buy your tickets Monday (rather than at the door)! Not only is this a super fun way to connect with DVIA families, but proceeds from the event help ensure we have funding for 4 Parent Educator Conferences and lunch for all of you! We get more fundraising cash if you pre-purchase your tickets! Thanks and don't forget your socks!
Enjoy your week!
| From Our Dean of Students
Thank you to everyone who helped plan the Opening Social and Film Festival this weekend! I loved connecting with those of you who attended with your families. :) A huge Thank You to the FAN members who organized this event, and to parents Jennifer Racusin and Julie Manz for creating such interesting film playlists for us to watch! I can't wait for the second film festival coming in November!
If you couldn't make it to the Opening Social on Saturday, or are just craving more time connecting with our community, join us at Scooter's Jungle THIS Tuesday afternoon! Details below. :) And keep your eye out for the next FAN Film Festival in November (it's on the calendar!).
Speaking of connecting...we currently have 91 students signed up and ready to attend Astro Camp and Catalina Camp! That is the largest number of students we've ever sent to camp, and I am SO excited! Thank you to everyone who turned in your payments and health forms on time! Families with students attending camp - please look for final emails from me in the next weeks that highlight important reminders and "need to knows"!
Enjoy your weekend :)

UCLA Stress Study Needs You!
If you have a child between the ages of 10 and 17, please consider participating in a computer-based study on stress with UCLA PhD Michelle Rozenman. Michelle worked with DVIA last year and has presented at several of our workshops. She is doing great research in the field of stress and anxiety in children. She needs at least 40 participants, and older siblings/non-DVIA siblings can participate as well! Click on the flyer for more details.
We Love to Hear from You!
Can you help us out by making a "Suggestion Box" and/or a "Kudos Box"? We want to hear your ideas as well as your acknowledgements of what we are doing that works. If you or your kiddo can make a cute, durable box/jar/can that will be housed in the front office, please let Michelle know! Thanks!
