Greetings DVIA Families!
A Few Words From Our Principal
Did you know that the state of California has taken official steps to replace the Californa Standards Test (CST) with the new Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)? 2013-2014 brings the end of the CSTs and a pilot of the new, Common Core-focused SBA. Here are some changes that you should know about (information below only reflects DVIA/grades K-8):
- Public schools must still participate in state testing and achieve the required participation rates, even during the 2013-2014 pilot year.
- Only 3rd through 8th grade students will take the SBA (previously, 2nd graders took the CST).
- The state will assign schools to participate in either the English Language Arts or Mathematics SBA exam.
- We do not yet know which test DVIA will be assigned.
- The test will be an online assessment focusing on the Common Core Standards (versus the previous focus on California State Content Standards).
- 5th and 8th graders will still take the CST Science test (as Common Core Standards have not yet been adopted for science or social studies). 8th graders will NOT take a social studies CST.
- The 4th and 7th grade Writing Test will not be administered this year.
- The 5th and 7th grade Physical Fitness Test will still take place next spring and there are no known changes.
I will let you know when more information is released. As always, we will continue with high-quality, project-based instruction that focuses on the crucial skills and knowledge students need to be successful individuals and independent thinkers. We will continue incorporating 21st Century Skills and the Habits of Heart and Mind. And we will do all we can to ensure students feel prepared and comfortable taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment, but we will not "teach to the test."
Tyler's Two Cents
We need your help with the Habits of Heart and Mind display!!!
We are currently in the process of designing a Habits of Heart and Mind display on campus(thanks in large part to the help of PeQue Brown and Cordula Allen!). Once completed, this area will become a focal point on campus for a featured Habit of Heart and Mind each month or two. As a reminder, we will be focusing on Reflection until our Spirit Day(s), October 31st and November 1st. As part of our display, we would love to incorporate pictures of your kids practicing these Habits. For this month's focus on the Habit of Reflection, we need pictures of your kids reflecting. Remember that reflection happens on three levels: #1. Reflecting on our work. #2. Reflecting on ourselves and our actions. #3. Reflecting on our world (community, school, etc). Please send a digital photo of your kids practicing the Habit of Reflection along with a short blurb explaining the picture to Tyler
. Also please title the email: Reflection picture. I'll print out these pictures and insert them in our display to help us all as a community see what reflection looks like (small pun intended). Thanks for your support and please try and send me the pictures October 20th.
Here's what you need to know this week:
Student-Led Conferences tomorrow and Thursday- NO ON-SITE SCHOOL
SLCs will take place on Wednesday, October 16th and Thursday, October 17th. There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday the 17th so that teachers have time to meet with all families (next semester SLCs take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday). Both the 16th and 17th are considered homeschool days and Enrichment classes will take place on both days.
Can You Help?
We would like to set up a playdough center outside for students to use during breaks. We need community help to keep us stocked up on fresh playdough. Please sign up on Sign-Up Genius, if you can contribute supplies. We prefer homemade playdough, which is inexpensive to make and can double as a homeschool learning lesson. Email Michelle for a recipe.
Parent Educator Resource Highlight
NoRedInk.com is a terrific common core-aligned free grammar resource for Cores 3-5. For extra engagement for students, they pick story characters and entertainment personalities that they favor, and the names are incorporated into quizzes and lessons. Students get unlimited help and parents can track student progress.
PBL@home (Parent Educator Workshop) is being rescheduled! Keep your eyes open for an announcement with the new date and time. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please contact Janette (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like to share at the workshop.
Do You Know A Family That Wants To Attend DVIA?
If you know a family that might want to attend DVIA, the first step is to attend an information meeting. The first meeting is coming up on Oct. 29 at 6 pm in the DVIA/DV Science Forum. Refer families to the Da Vinci Schools website for more information about our program and enrollment, including future meeting dates.
News From Our Family Action Network ("FAN"):
Core-Specific Yahoo Groups
Core-specific Yahoo Groups are returning this year. These Yahoo Groups are the perfect place to share resources, project ideas, information about field trips or other community programs that relate to DVIA projects. You can also request help and support, form study groups and anything else core-specific that you can think of.
Core moderators will be sending out invitations. If you don't receive one or want to join another core's group, you'll find contact information for the moderators here. If you have any feedback regarding these groups, please email Lisa Grady or Tasneem Sutarwala.
Hold The Date! See you there!
FAN Needs You!!
A big thank you to the families who filled out the FAN survey to let us know how they can support FAN! If you haven't filled out the survey yet, we can still use lots of help. Here is the link to a quick survey to tell us how you'd like to help.
