Hello Da Vinci Families,
We hope this newsletter finds your families well!
We are excitedly revving up for Exhibition Night on November 6th and 8th. Students and teachers can't wait to show you their hard work on all the different projects happening around campus. Exhibition is one of my favorite times at Da Vinci because our students get to show what they know and we have a chance to celebrate their learning. Also, it is always great to see families bring friends and grandparents to our events because we love being part of your family and getting to know the people you care about.
I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to talk about the elections. One of my favorite quotes comes from the French philosopher Voltaire, who said: "I may not agree with a word you say, but I will defend to death your right to say it." We are incredibly fortunate to live in a country where we have the right and opportunity to make our voices heard. It is not my intent to tell anyone how to vote, but I do want to make you aware that if Proposition 30 or 38 do not pass, California public schools will be facing further budget cuts which will, indubitably impact children's educational experience. I encourage you to research further this topic and others before voting. Here is a link to bipartisan information about Prop 30 from the Secretary of State.

OUR ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY
Annual Giving Campaign & Chevron Matching Challenge
Da Vinci Schools' Annual Giving Campaign
is our top fundraising priority and the fundraiser we ask EVERY family to support.
This year, we are excited to announce that Chevron has generously donated $50,000 to Da Vinci Schools in the form of a matching challenge. Every donation and pledge to the Annual Giving Campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Chevron up to $50,000!!
Pledges must be made by Dec. 31 and paid by June 1, 2013 in order to be eligible for the Chevron match.
Gifts to the Annual Giving Campaign touch every K-12 student in the Da Vinci community and help bridge the gap between what the state provides and what it really costs to deliver an outstanding education. As state budget cuts to education continue, we need your support now more than ever.
All currently enrolled K-12 families should have received an Annual Giving packet in the mail containing an appeal letter, pledge card and return envelope.
Please give what you can. Sometimes grants and foundation donations depend on 100% participation, even if individual donations are modest. Every gift makes a difference!
Families Using Outdoor Equipment After School
For families with students who use the outdoor equipment after school, please:
- Please return all equipment to where it belongs
- Please clean up equipment such as the Imagination Playground, sandbox toys, blocks, etc.
- Remember that safe play rules apply, even outside the regular school hours -- play respectfully, no weapon play and no hitting
October's Restaurant Fundraiser
Jackson's Food + Drink on Rosecrans in El Segundo is donating 15% of your food bill this month (exclusive of bar and happy hour items) to DVIA. This offer is for Monday through Thursday and no flyer is needed. Just tell them you're from DVIA. Check out their yummy menu here
No School For Veterans Day
In honor of Veterans Day, there is no school for the T/F cohort on Friday, November 9th and no school for the M/Th cohort on Monday, November 12th. Please note that November 9th is a staff development day and should still be used as an at-home work day.
Parent Work Journals Due -- 11/15
Work Journals & Daily Engagement Forms are due on Thursday, November 15th and Friday, November 16th.
Thanksgiving Break - No School
We are closed from Monday, November 19th through Friday, November 23rd.
Family Action Network (FAN) News
More than 80 people enjoyed ice skating at the Toyota Center, bringing in $440!
Our first movie night was full of fun and very well attended, plus it brought in $855!
Thank you to everybody who dined at The Spot. You earned us $200!
Our first two pizza lunches this year raised $587!
Although our primary focus for these events is building community, we truly appreciate (and need!) the funds that we raise while having fun - THANKS for your participation!
Also, a special thank you to everyone who helped make all of these events happen!!
Next FAN Meeting
Please note that the FAN meeting originally scheduled for November 1st is not occurring, as there are no significiant updates since our meeting at Back to School Night. The next FAN meeting will occur in January. Please feel free to contact Nancy Slupski or one of the FAN council members if you have questions or are interested in volunteering.

Core 5 Science Camp
Our Core 5 students are away at camp this week on Catalina Island and will return Friday. A big shout out to the parent volunteers who supported this event!
Spirit & Pizza Day
Monday & Tuesday, October 29th & 30th (Rescheduled)
Spirit Day theme is Sports/College Jersey Day! Wear your sports or college-themed jerseys. Remember that all other dress code agreements apply (appropriate pants/shorts/ skirts, hats off in class) and students must wear polo shirts if they choose not to wear a sports or college themed-jersey.

Students are required to attend and a special exhibition dress code applies. Families are expected to attend their student's presentation, and encouraged to visit other classrooms, too. Exhibitions are an exciting product of our home and school collaboration. Check with your student's teachers for details. Family and friends are also welcome!

Outside Learning Opportunities
Friday, November 9th | 12 pm | El Camino College, Marsee Auditorium
We have been invited to a special free student concert with the 67-member Symphonic Jazz Orchestra and special guest piano soloist Dave Grusin. Students will be introduced to the families of the orchestra and learn about jazz and classical music. The central theme of the concert is "What is improvisation" and the program is geared toward 4th-8th grade students. Dia de los Muertos at Da Vinci Design!

The Spanish department at Da Vinci Design cordially invite you to join them as they celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with music, food, activities, and students presenting their work! There will be stations for children to experience the event as well!
Do You Have Great Outside Learning Resources To Share?
Some terrific learning resources have been shared on our Yahoo Group Listserv. In addition to posting your resources to the group, please send them to Lisa Grady at email@example.com so that she can add them to our Parent Resource Website and make your hard work available to families for years to come.
Please also be aware that we are in the process of establishing Core-specific Yahoo Groups to support discussion and resource sharing within individual Cores. As discussions on resource sharing migrate from the main group to individual Listservs, it will become even more important to get your suggestions shared in one place that everybody can access, as many resources will apply across multiple Cores.
As we kick off this new school year, we again want to thank you for all the ways you partner with us to make DVIA a truly wonderful learning community! At the end of May, some of you signed up for various volunteer opportunities for this school year - thank you! FAN council members will contact you in the coming weeks to engage you in the various opportunities.

Please note that volunteer opportunities may shift as we gain greater clarity on actual needs, so thanks in advance your flexibility. There are plenty of service opportunities, so find the one that calls to you! :)
